Glasser’s principal theories are very simplistic in nature. Many of them are ideas that I have simply taken for granted. To put the students in control of their actions is an act of empowerment. Students, just like everyone else in the world, do not like to have their lives delegated to them. Giving them choices can improve the classroom environment immensely.

To what degree teachers are able to this will vary. Glassers process of correcting students in the: What, do, evaluate, format could be very effective, if teachers have built a strong rapport. The idea of a community is vital in this type of classroom and without out it the system will collapse.

For my own classroom, Glasser’s ideas are perfect. I am not the type of person who likes to relegate in an authoratative manner. Personally, I know that powers struggles are fruitless. Students are not perfect, but they do not deserve to be talked down to by anyone. Giving them agency helps them learn how to make right decisions in the future, even though it may be more time consuming, the end result is worth it.

As students were working on their projects today during second period, an unexpected vistitor appeared. A policeman came walking in, with his springer spaniel and authoritativelyordered everyone out of the classroom. As guilty as I feel, this did bring a little bit of excitement to the otherwise ordinary day.

Students seemed energized by the interruption as well and the hallway swelled with chattering voices. The random drug search surprised and shocked me. I was unaware that searches of this magnitude were conducted in random classrooms, without probable cause. While I understand the purpose that the searches serve, I can not help but wonder if student’s ever feel violated and disempowered as a result of them.

If this were to happen in my classroom, I may try and find a way to work into the lesson and have students research their own rights and debate on whether or not random searches are fair. Students are learning to be responsible citizens and this could serve as a way to connect them with the laws and legislation of our society at large.

So the last week has been absolutely crazy! There honestly has just not been enough time during the day. Tests, projects, projects and essays!! Ughhhh, I just am praying for the days when I have become an organized veteran teacher.

Everytime I think about all of the things that I have to do before December, I almost begin to hyperventilate(a little dramatic). Do all beginning teachers fell this way at some point? Not only are we dealing with being good at our soon to be craft, talking to parents and school work, but also the future organization of our entire careers.

I realize that this is done in parts and that this entire semester has been dedicated to preparing us, but as we approach the end I have begun to feel overwhelmed. Does anyone else feel this way! I am sure when we are teachers that time will remain the enemy, never enough to include sleep, work and play.

I am comforted by all of the ideas I have received this semester, now the question is how do I make them my own and remain confident in them?

Today when I went to my second period observation I became a little frustrated. One of my cooperating teachers was absent and the other had changed the format of the project that the class is working. I had to catch up and read the material as quickly as I could and then try and help this students.

I realize that the teacher needed to do what was best for his classroom and the students, but I can not wait to get my own classroom! One of my pet peeves is being ill-prepared. The professors are giving me so many ideas to work with and I can’t help but feel that I am outgrowing my current position in the classroom. I know our time is growing short at awesome high and I will soon be student-teaching, but is it soon enough? Sometimes I wonder about how great it would be to be in the same support system I have now, except with my own classroom!

Professor B was teaching us about the importance of communication, repoire and boundaries. While I realize that there is an unlimited amount of information for me still to learn(as we can never know everything), I think that the foundation that has been built here at Awesome High will serve me well.

While I was working on the strategy notebook this weekend I noticed many of my descriptions referred to schema. We talk about schema a lot during class and it is now a term that is in my expressive vocabulary. I knew that it was important, but now I am beginning to feel that activating a students schema can be the factor that causes success instead of failure.

Throughout our lessons the professors have emphasized the importance of making connections and I can now see that because students are often not automatically able to make these connections we must help them do it. For me personally connections for the material that we have been learning this semester is really coming together and I know that my greater understanding of learning techniques and processes will help me in my career.

As a soon to be educator, my knowledge of these theories is beginning to make sense to my application in the classroom. In the past education classes have been interesting but the material was distant from my everyday life. Now that I am in the classroom and seeing a broader umbrella of information the real life connections to all of my learning are making sense. This is a very rewarding feeling and I look forward to more connected learning for myself and my students!

Amazing! My second video-teach went much better than the first. Students were fully engaged and excited to participate. They started out a little sluggish, but once I broke them up and took team names, things only went up hill. The students are currently working on a project that incorporates making a game(video, board or trivia) about an assigned ancient civilization. I chose to model an example today, by playing jeopardy. The students and my cooperating teacher seemed to really enjoy it and students even referred to “next time”.

The students content knowledge greatly increased since my last lesson and I think this helped with participation. While the jeopardy game was more of a review session than anything else, I felt that the students were able to strengthen their connections to the subject matter. I also felt much more of a rapport with the students. This could be because I have gotten to know them better and/or because the activity was more engaging.

I felt like the review really helped activate students schema and got them thinking! I realize that we can’t play games everyday, but I am excited by the reaction of my students and hope I can create many more lessons that have the same result. It is clear to me now that great teachers are not necessarily born, but made.

Today I had the chance to observe a class that is completely out of my teaching field. This class was life skills and before going I thought that I would see little in common with my own content area of history. Boy was I wrong, after watching a civil rights video and going over vocabulary such as empathy (which is a major idea in understanding history), I realized that the teachers lesson could easily be adapted to a history course.

When you get down to why we teach history in our curriculum in the first place, it is to foster understanding of places and people completely foreign to us. This is a basic life skill which is important to every-day adult life. I had never seen the connection so clearly as I did today! Interdisciplinary teaching was not only useful but maybe necessary for the teacher to use in this lesson and he did it very well. The video contained both factual information and evoked a sense of responsibility to our society.

The students seemed to respond very well and the entire lesson was a great success. I can see myself using tactics such as these to teach a history lesson or an English one. The ability to step into someones shoes and feel their pain or triumph is truly essential in understanding both literary context and the basic method of historians. This observation overall helped me to see the apparent connections that can and should be made between subjects. It also allowed me to see how simple it is to implement them.

Well we had our first test today on what we have learned so far in our curriculm course. I was a little nervous, because I was out sick the last class. This always bugs me, as I feel I have missed tons of information and simultaneously forgotten everything previously learned.

However, I must say the old brain has retained a surprising amount of information. I am impressed with the job that the professors have done. Through careful scaffolding and reteaching they are making us experts in the information. Both professors do a great job of incorporating fun and engagin activities, that do not feel like work! The class seems effortless and the information is easily absorbed into our brains!

In my own class I hope I can model this. I know many other interns at different schools are not nearly as satisfied with their programs. The combination of support and planning(as well as encouragement) helps to make our classes such a success, which will hopefully help us turn into successful teachers! They key to their approach is to constantly reinforce the information that is being taught and remain positive about the students progress. I know that this probably sounds much easier than it is to implement, but I hope with practice that I can master this type of teaching as well.

My cooperating teacher is an interesting fellow. He mantains a relationship with his students by means of intimidation and sarcasm. While this sounds a little negative, in actuality he strikes a good balance. His students know that they can joke around with him, but they are also aware that he is in charge. Witty banter passes back and forth and the students listen when he talks.

It always amazes me to see the many different teaching styles. I know that there are many wrong ways to go about managing your classroom, but I guess there are just as many right. In every textbook I see, I hear that sarcasm and intimidation are incorrect ways about mantaining a classroom. To see it in action however, along with the personality of the teacher, it seems right in the situation. Do not get me wrong the teacher does take on many caring roles in the classroom and is always willing to help.

I only wonder what my balance will be. I can do all of the planning in the world, but I guess only experience will tell me. At the moment I am still unsure of how to build the relationship neccessary to let the students know that I care, but also that I am in charge. This I know will be an issue for me in the coming months.

The students in my class are consistently working in group projects or on their own. There is very little lecture, which is good for me as a new teacher, because it allows me to interact with the students more. However, it is a bit of a problem to keep students focused. They are consistently on the Internet, which supplies endless amounts of distraction. As I pass by and comment to the students they respond momentarily, but quickly return to their chosen emails or music website.

I know that the professors want us to maximize time-on-task in the classroom, so I often attempt to engage the students further. Today was somewhat easier, as they had a deadline tomorrow, but still a few students practically refused to work. I am beginning to wonder if the technological advances available to some of these students may be harmful to their overall learning experience. I am undecided on this, but can’t help thinking back to the idea of balance that the professors have been talking about.

With the variety of students, there is a variety of different learners. One of the children that I had issues getting on task today has ADHD. His needs should ideally be better met in this type of situation, since he is not monotonously listening to straight lecture. Still I feel that he is not getting what he needs from the class and teachers. Learning is such an individualized pursuit and I am only just beginning to consider the consequences of a classroom environment.
